Elements is an international magazine for mineralogy, geochemistry, and petrology that is jointly published by 18 professional societies in the geosciences. In Fall 2025, we ended up with extra copies of the Elements issue “Sample Return Through the Ages” (vol. 21, no. 5) due to a printing misalignment on a small portion of the cover. The scientific content is completely unaffected—only the cover layout shifted. Rather than recycle these copies, we’d like to share them with educators, students, clubs, departments, and outreach programs.
This 64-page thematic issue provides a comprehensive overview of the mineralogical, petrological, and geochemical insights gained from extraterrestrial samples returned by both crewed and robotic missions. Each article highlights a specific planetary body or group of bodies—such as the Moon, Mars, asteroids, comets, and icy worlds—summarizing past missions, current and planned missions, and future concepts. The issue also includes a wide range of news and updates from Elements’ participating societies, offering students and early-career scientists a window into the broader mineralogy–geochemistry–petrology community and opportunities to get involved.
An exceptional opportunity, as a box of 25 magazines has a wholesale value of $500. The magazines are free.
These are great for:
- In-class guided reading and discussion activities
- Short research projects or article-based assignments
- Project-based learning modules on planetary science or geochemistry
- Outreach and recruitment events
- Undergraduate clubs and seminar discussions
- Summer programs
- Community colleges
- Mineral & rock clubs
- High-school STEM teachers and science enrichment programs
